Griffith, the ambitious commander of the Band of the Hawk mercenaries, takes on the role of the lone swordsman Guts after Guts is beaten in a combat. Initially suspicious of everyone, he eventually develops a relationship with his new allies and their commander via bloody conflicts. He starts to have second thoughts about a life lived by the sword as they advance in rank to become an army, but he is unaware that a terrible destiny is in store.
