Censorship Ruins Anime!

Censorship Ruins Anime!

We can’t dispute that most otaku tend to be of the adult sort, despite the fact that anime may appeal to people of various ages. We enjoy our bloody fights as in the Berserk series, and we want our oppai to be big and obvious like in High School DxD. We’ve talked a lot about how censorship in anime seems to be easing up over time, allowing us viewers more to appreciate and less to lament when God Rays cover up a lame bath scene or blood is coloured pink to try and make a horrible image a little more “tasteful.” Unfortunately, there is still censorship in the anime community, and when it does, even the best anime shows can be severely damaged.

HIDE THE KIDS!

HIDE THE KIDS!

Again, anime is a form of media that can be enjoyed by people of all sexes and ages. Both more sentimental series like Komi Can’t Communicate and Pokémon continue to be popular with children—and occasionally adults. However, some of us anime fans who are more mature in nature demand complete oppai and nudity without any form of censorship. The ecchi/harem ultimate series we were expecting to see, World’s End Harem, ended up being heavily censored and became the most talked-about anime of 2022—but for the wrong reasons.

The oppai blocking pain seen in World’s End Harem was unnecessary because many streaming services, like HDIVE, allow viewers to view different versions. The censorship is not only excessively intrusive—at times, it can completely erase scenes—but it also undermines the idea as it was intended in the original source. The manga for World’s End Harem was intended to be a fantasy about the last man in the world who is now adored by all women to restart the world, but it turned into a joke when viewers saw that some of the show’s female characters have been so severely censored that they are practically walking black bars! This is a perfect example of how censorship hurts an anime so much that it makes you wonder, “Why?”

Adults Know What Blood Looks Like

Adults Know What Blood Looks Like

Many anime fans were truly shocked to learn that certain shows featured such suppressed images. Bloody moments in Tokyo Ghoul were replaced with enormous black shadows, which completely destroyed the series’ mood. In order to avoid bloodbath situations, some of their most brutal bouts from the manga were substituted with enormous multicoloured mosaic graphics. Adults have probably already cut ourselves on manga endings or pages or opened a new FIGMA box, so this level of censorship seems absurd.

OUR OPPAI!?!?

OUR OPPAI!?!?

Western consumers may believe that anime is heavily censored solely for us, however this is untrue. Most recently, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 was censored in China, which was one of the finest anime of 2021. Here, Ilulu, one of the recruits, got her bust so diminished that her loli design made sense! If we’re being totally honest, her enormous oppai were practically erased, and even her clothes was changed to hide her pantsu! The years 2021 and 2022 weren’t kind to ecchi aficionados in the anime community; the agony is felt globally rather than just in a single nation.

Will a day ever come when all anime is uncensored?

Okay, allowing our adult nature to stray for a time, we must keep in mind that anime censoring serves to safeguard younger audiences as well as us anime fans. As we mentioned above, there are occasions when editing anime is completely pointless, but sometimes having some anime be PG-rated or at least provide a more family-friendly experience isn’t such a bad thing. There will never be a day when all anime is uncensored because of this. However, there’s always hope, right?

Final Thoughts

Mild censoring in anime is acceptable, and we have no issues with it. However, when anime is censored in bizarre ways, such in World’s Wind Harem, even the most anticipated anime can end up getting bad reviews or even being boycotted to make a point. The problems with World’s End Harem, we hope, serve as a reminder to anime studios that, while children need to be protected, adults do not, and that there must be a way to watch a show either uncensored or censored.
