Manga Creator Gosaku Ota Passes Away

On Monday, the Sponichi news website revealed that Ota had developed COVID-19 towards the end of November and had been rushed to the hospital through emergency transport. Although his condition had stabilised, as his strength waned, he developed pneumonia and died from it.

Ota, who was born in 1948, originally worked as Shotaro Ishinomori’s assistant before making his debut as a creator of shjo comics.

He is likely best known for his manga adaptations of Go Nagai’s books, including Kotetsu Zieg, Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Great Mazinger, UFO Robo Grandizer, and Mazinger Z (seen at right).

He illustrated the second half of the Machine Saurer manga by Go Nagai (Ken Ishikawa drew the first part of the manga).

In addition, he created the fishing comic Tsuri.
