The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Makoto Shinkai’s first-ever feature film, is a heartbreaking and lovely tale of friendship and loss. It features amazing cinematography and the director’s signature emotional take on science fiction. Three youths in a different post-war Japan develop an obsession with a mystery tower that is located across the Union border and rises high into the sky. As their companion Sayuri vanishes before it is finished, Hiroki and Takuya continue to work on the improvised aircraft they promised to use to visit the tower together eventually. A number of years later, the tower abruptly ignites, igniting a global menace. The young lads have recently learned that their long-lost friend Sayuri might be the key to everything.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Animated Film, the Fantasia Film Festival Silver Prize, and the Tokyo International Anime Fair Award for Expression Technique.

In a romance by Makoto Shinkai, young love, missed connections, and unrequited feelings come together. 5 Centimeters Per Second: A Chain Of Short Stories About Their Distance explores the joys and heartbreak of falling in love against the stunning backdrop that distinguishes Shinkai’s work. The story is told in three vignettes. Takaki longs to confess his feelings to Akari, his childhood sweetheart, but both of their families relocate before any feelings can fully develop. They stay in touch, but as school and new friends divert them, they eventually drift apart. As the seasons go by, Takaki manages his relationships while being haunted by everything he didn’t say to his first love, Akari. The Makoto Shinkai debut movie Voices of a Distant Star, which is accessible on Blu-ray for the first time in North America, is also included. The Asia Pacific Screen Awards’ Best Animated Feature Film category was won by 5 Centimeters Per Second.

The epic fantasy adventure Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below takes place in a world where there are old gods. Asuna is a reclusive person who prefers to spend her time listening to a radio that her father left behind. One day, she hears a strange song that strikes a unique chord in her heart. It results in a chance meeting with a mysterious boy who takes Asuna to Agartha, a mythical place where the dead can be raised to life. Asuna travels through the mythical lands because she is driven by the song and the boy, but hostile warriors and horrifying creatures will do anything to stop her from learning the secrets of their world. Children Who Chase Lost Voices won Best Art Direction at the Tokyo Anime Award and was nominated for Best Feature at Annecy.
